Seeking Host Families

The IU Office of International Development (OID) would like to invite you to take part in a unique opportunity to engage with young emerging leaders from around the world participating in On-Demand Youth Leadership Programs (YLPs) sponsored by the US Department of State. YLP participants spend four weeks in the United States learning about community service, civic leadership and American culture.  OID is seeking households who would like to host them for their two-week stay in Bloomington.  This is an excellent cross-cultural experience, providing lasting friendships for everyone involved.  There are two YLP groups being hosted by Indiana University this summer:

·         The Baltics (Latvia, Lithuania & Estonia):  July 20 – August 4

·         Southern Europe (Spain, Italy & Slovenia):  August 14 – 25.

Participants primarily range in age from 15-18 years old with 3 adult chaperones accompanying each group. They will arrive with intermediate to advanced English speaking and comprehension skills and will be able to reasonably communicate with their host family household.  During weekdays, participants spend the day – 9:00 am to 5:00 pm – engaged in program activities.  Host families are responsible for providing transportation to campus before 9:00 am and picking guests up after 5:00 pm.  Lunch is provided by the OID on weekdays and host families are asked to provide all other meals.  It’s understood that households often have other commitments and that complications in schedules arise.  OID will arrange accommodations to support our host families, such as alternate transportation and/or supplemental housing, as needed.

Singles, retirees and families all make excellent hosts.  Anyone who is interested in this rich cross-cultural experience is encouraged to apply.  After applications are submitted, a background check and a home visit (to be scheduled at a convenient time for the applicant) are required.  A brief orientation session will take place 1-2 weeks in advance of each group’s arrival.  Please join us in showing our guests a diverse and genuine slice of American life!

Uplands PEAK Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to foster compassion and educate the public about sustainability and food production. Our sanctuary gives visitors the unique opportunity to meat and connect with farmed animals as individuals, and offers a place where they can deepen their connection with people and nature.

According to PEAK co-funder Michelle Pruitt, "We have seen time and time again that, given the opportunity to experience the sentience of farmed animals, people ar changed. And those changes ripple out into the world."

We will fly like the red-tail hawk, tunnel through dirt like the earthworms, and our knowledge of the outdoors will grow like the seeds we plant! Learning will take place in the form of hands-on exploration, active games, and creative, natural, crafts. Held in the WonderGarden (Rain or shine! Tent will be set up if raining. Cancellation dependent upon storms) Ticketed but FREE with museum admission.

STEM Sunday

Every Sunday 1:30 PM-4:30 PM

Program Description: STEM Sunday is a free, drop-in, challenge-based experience that encourages families to engage in the engineering and design process. Emphasis is on this process rather than the product. Projects are not “take-home”, but may include a take-home element. A simple goal/design challenge is introduced to guide the process and encourage engagement. Projects are “easy entry” for all ages, meaning that specialized skills are not generally needed and children as young as kindergarten can participate. Projects use simple, inexpensive materials, emphasizing that families can easily re-create the project at home.

Deep Diver

Wednesdays 5 PM-5:30 PM

Program Description:Join marine biologist Sam Couch to dive deeper into the science of our new coral reef. These 30 minute talks will feature hands-on elements, tours of our coral reef aquarium, insight from an expert, and time for questions. Each phase of the reef will have a different talk topic. Themes vary by month. Free with museum admission.
