Book Fundraiser for Charlie Bird of Bloomington's Medical Care

Charlie Bird, a green-winged macaw, is a local legend in Bloomington, known for riding on the back of a bicycle and dancing to live music at the farmers’ market.

In 2018, Charlie had a health crisis. He nearly died from an avian virus that affects his central nervous system. With treatment from an avian veterinary specialist, including antibiotic and antiviral injections (some directly to his brain), he survived is expected to live a normal lifespan - 80 years or more! However, Charlie requires daily medication and regular visits to the specialist to keep him healthy. He'll need medical care for his condition for the rest of his long life, with total costs estimated at over $25,000.

To support Charlie’s medical needs, his fans are creating Charlie Bird Loves Bloomington, a children's picture book that follows Charlie as he enjoys his favorite activities in Bloomington, from bike riding to paddle-boarding, visiting the farmer’s market, and even sledding.

The book will be crowdfunded on Kickstarter, launching in early April. Fans can "back" the project and be among the first to receive a copy of Charlie’s book. One book is $15, a digital download is just $5, and a limited number of top-tier backers can receive a real Charlie Bird feather! Books are expected to ship out to Kickstarter backers in July and will be available for sale online and at select locations in Bloomington thereafter.

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics

Do you want to make history by getting the COVID-19 vaccine out to your community?  Good news!  You can, by joining the Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps!
As the COVID-19 vaccine becomes more available and we enter phases to vaccinate large portions of the public, the Monroe County Health Department will need your help.

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national program organized locally to coordinate volunteers in the event of a public health emergency or disaster.  Anyone is free to join, medical AND non-medical, as long as they are 18 or older and do not have a criminal history.

Volunteer roles can vary depending on your background.  Your time and involvement are always completely voluntary.

Clinics are being planned pending Phase 1B rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.  Details are not yet known at this time but expect to be vaccinating critical infrastructure personnel as early as January.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email them at monroemrc@co.monroe.in.us for registration instructions and more information.

City Parks Department Launches Website to Connect A Fair of the Arts Customers with Local Artisans

The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, like dozens of other art fair event planners, opted not to hold the monthly A Fair of the Arts art and fine craft fair last summer due to concerns and restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

To give customers opportunities to support local small businesses and the arts, the Department created a website that features links to the websites of more than 50 area artisans and studios. Shoppers who would ordinarily visit the in-person A Fair of the Arts can shop and buy directly from their favorite artist or fine craftsperson safely from a physically distanced, internet-enabled device like a smartphone or tablet.

The website, afairoftheartsbtown.weebly.com, is a stunning collection of gallery images and lists of artists and studios divided by their type of work. Shoppers may browse through categories including clay, glass, jewelry, woodwork and metalwork, personal care, fiber arts, drawing/painting/photography, natural materials, and recycled arts.

"Artists have had few opportunities to sell their work over the past six months, and patrons of local artists and the arts have had few opportunities to see what artists have created, and to buy locally made, unique items. As we move toward the holidays and gift-giving seasons, we hope this website will help connect shoppers to the local art community," said Crystal Ritter, program coordinator for the Parks and Recreation Department's A Fair of the Arts.

The website will remain live through Nov. 27.

Local artisans, as well as local farm vendors and food and beverage artisans, will have an in-person opportunity to demonstrate and sell their products at the annual Holiday Market, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Showers Common, 401 N. Morton St. The Holiday Market takes place entirely outside at Showers Common. For more information about the Holiday Market, visit bloomington.in.gov/holidaymarket.
